Want to set up a PC – TV connection (in this case a laptop)? These instructions are for Windows XP.
Here how I did it. Not that screens and options may differ depending on what OS version and graphics card you have:
- Plug in your SCART cable.
- Open Control Panel->Display
- Click on the Settings tab. You will see two numbered monitor icons. Click on monitor 2 and click on ‘Entend my Windows desktop onto this monitor‘:
- Click back on monitor 1, and click the ‘Advanced‘ button. This will bring up the monitor properties, and choose the tab for your graphics card. Click on ‘Graphics Properties’.

- If the TV is not connected, you will probably only see the ‘Notebook’ option, depending on what else you have plugged in. When the TV is connected, choose ‘Television’ in the left panel. For ‘Screen Area’, 800×600 worked best for me. Choose the ‘Video Standard’ — NTSC for Europe and PAL for N.America. Not sure about elsewhere. Once all settings are done, choose ‘Apply’. Control is now given to the TV, where the picture will appear (make sure you are on the AV video channel). The laptop screen goes black.

- You are given an interval, usually 15 seconds, to accept the new settings. Hit ‘OK’

And that’s about it. If you had different experiences or problems, share them with me and I’d be glad to add to the instructions.
